👁 "Dom Kino" reveals viewer preferences
In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the "Dom Kino" television channel conducted a study on viewer preferences.
The survey results indicate that modern Russian audiences have grown weary of “glossy” imagery and superhero tropes, favoring stories about real people and time-tested genres instead.
The Hero’s Portrait and Core Values
- A Demand for Realism: 62% of respondents want to see characters on screen who resemble ordinary people. Idealized characters for whom everything comes easily are of interest to only 9% of viewers.
- The Crisis in Children’s Cinema: 73% of respondents believe that modern teenagers lack worthy on-screen role models among their peers. Superheroes are also outliers in this category, favored by only 8%.
- Moral Compasses: Russians identified patriotism, friendship, and justice (48%), as well as family and loyalty (22%), as the key values they look for in cinema.
Genres and Viewing Habits
- Top Genres: Thrillers and detective stories led the rankings (28%), followed by comedies (20%) and documentaries (14%). Furthermore, nearly 40% of viewers believe that historical and documentary films are currently undervalued in Russia.
- TV as Background: One in four Russians admitted that their favorite movie channel runs constantly in their home as “background noise.” Meanwhile, 53% of those surveyed watch movies or TV series daily.
- Consumption Culture: 57% of viewers prefer binge-watching multiple episodes in a row, while 13% make it a point never to start a show without a snack, upholding the cult of “eating while watching.”
The traditional TV guide remains the primary source of inspiration for content selection (30%), outpacing recommendations from social media (17%) and online platforms (9%). For the majority (43%), the main criterion for choosing a program remains the simple opportunity to relax and distract themselves from daily worries.
