💶 European public television faces budget cuts

European public broadcasting is mired in a financial crisis. According to a report by NPA Conseil, over the past decade, the share of funding for state-owned channels relative to the GDP of 45 countries has shrunk by nearly a quarter.

Across the EU, operating revenues have dropped by an average of 8.6%, while in France, this figure has hit a critical 9.9%.

The most significant resource reductions were felt by the BBC (UK), ARD/ZDF (Germany), and France Télévisions. The total losses for Europe’s six largest media groups have reached €4.3 billion.

In France, the cost of maintaining public broadcasting amounts to €4.20 per month per resident. This is nearly twice as cheap as the most basic streaming subscription and 45% less expensive than a single cinema ticket.

Bucking the general trend are Spain (+16.9%) and Belgium (+11.6%), where funding for broadcasters has actually increased.

Experts note that while companies are attempting to offset the decline in state subsidies by growing their own commercial revenues, the pressure on budgets remains unprecedented.
