Souring statistics

The average annual income for a British actor (including supplementary work) is just £17,000. By comparison, the statutory National Living Wage stands at approximately £22,000, while the national average salary is £37,430.

Stage management professionals earn slightly more—averaging £25,000—yet this remains significantly below the UK average.

The report highlights a precarious reality: 73% of actors have virtually no savings. An equal percentage admit to losing sleep over financial anxiety, while 69% struggle to cover daily living expenses such as housing and utilities.

Barriers for the working class

Financial pressure begins long before an actor secures their first role. The costs of professional portfolios, training, self-tape recordings, and travel to auditions require substantial investment. As a result, the industry is increasingly becoming an exclusive club for the wealthy: 58% of actors come from high-income professional backgrounds.

Experts fear that without familial financial support, working-class talent will simply be unable to enter the profession, ultimately impoverishing the cultural landscape.

Support measures

In response to these findings, the Actors’ Trust is expanding its assistance programs:

• Appearance Grants: Funding for new headshots for those whose appearance has changed due to illness, facilitating their return to work.
• Mental Health Support: Launching fully subsidized therapy in partnership with Wellbeing in the Arts.
• Winter Hardship Payments: Special grants to cover essential costs during the difficult winter months.

Actor and trust ambassador Christopher Eccleston noted that these figures are not just statistics, but stories of loneliness and the fragility of success that he has witnessed throughout his career. The study is intended to serve as a catalyst for a major discussion on how to secure a more sustainable future for those who bring our favorite characters to life.
