🎬 Family drama overtakes Mario in China
Amidst a general lull in the Chinese film market, the local drama "It’s OK" has managed to seize the lead. According to data from Artisan Gateway, the film earned $4.6 million (31 million yuan) over the weekend of April 10–12, climbing to the top of the box office.
Directed by Yang Lin, “It’s OK” has now brought its cumulative total to $18.7 million. The story, which explores the complex relationship between a mother and daughter confronted by family secrets during a medical crisis, has resonated deeply with Chinese audiences.
Last week’s leader, the animated hit “The Super Mario Movie: Galactic Edition,” slipped to second place with $3.3 million (totaling $14.7 million). Meanwhile, the space epic “Project Hail Mary” maintained its hold on the third spot, adding $3 million to reach an impressive total of $33.7 million.
Debuting in fourth place was the thriller “The Caged Butterfly.” This dark tale of a cursed mansion and a deadly game with ghosts earned its creators $2.4 million. Rounding out the top five was the melodrama “Now I Met Her,” which brought in $1.8 million for a total of $8 million.
Despite the shift in leadership, analysts describe this period as one of the weakest of the year. Total weekend theater revenue amounted to just $21 million, marking the second-worst result of 2026. China’s year-to-date total of $1.84 billion is trailing 50.1% behind the same period in 2025, signaling a prolonged crisis in theatrical viewership within the region.
