👈 Disney implements major cuts at Marvel
The Walt Disney Company has announced large-scale layoffs, with approximately one thousand employees across the media conglomerate set to be let go. New CEO Josh D’Amaro explained the decision as a necessary step to "optimize operations" and redistribute resources.
Marvel Studios has found itself at the center of the storm. The staff reductions have impacted various departments, including production, publishing (Marvel Comics), finance, and legal.
- The End of an Era: Nearly the entire Academy Award-winning visual development team at Marvel Studios has been dismissed. These are the artists and designers responsible for the iconic aesthetics of the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. Many had been with the company for over a decade.
- The “Gig” Pivot: Only a skeleton crew remains of the once-expansive department. Moving forward, Disney will hire specialists on a contract basis tailored to specific projects.
The primary reasons cited for the cuts are a reduced Marvel release schedule and a general policy of austerity. Interestingly, artificial intelligence was not a factor in these layoffs; Disney is simply adapting to a slower pace of production within the film industry.
