🎛 Google Cloud and Avid to pioneer AI-driven video editing
Google Cloud and Avid, the developer of professional software for the media industry, have entered into a multi-year agreement. The companies plan to integrate generative and "agentic" artificial intelligence directly into the video production workflow.
Google’s AI models—Gemini and Vertex AI—will be embedded into the legendary Avid Media Composer editing system, which is used to create the majority of Hollywood films and television series.
The AI will be capable of automatically tagging archives, transforming decades of raw footage into a searchable database as accessible as a common website. This will allow editors to locate specific shots in seconds, replacing hours of manual searching.
According to Google representatives, the industry is moving from simple automation toward full-scale collaboration. An editor will be able to work with an “intelligent agent” that handles technical drudgery—such as matching styles and populating timelines—thereby freeing up time for the creative process.
Buzz Hays, a former Lucasfilm executive and current Google Cloud expert, notes that this technology will enable innovative ways to repurpose legacy content. For example, classic 22-minute sitcoms could be automatically “recut” into the micro-series formats currently popular on social media, while accounting for the original act structures between commercial breaks.
Among the early clients already testing Google’s new AI capabilities are giants such as NBCUniversal, Major League Baseball (MLB), the French broadcaster Canal+, and the media conglomerate Gray Media.
Avid CEO Wellford Dillard emphasized that the partnership with Google Cloud will help create a secure and scalable environment that adapts to the creative goals of each individual creator while maintaining the flexibility of the entire production ecosystem.
