šŸš€ Mario sets historic records at the global box office

The animated sensation The Super Mario Galaxy Movie—a joint venture between Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal—continues its triumphant run. Over the past weekend, the film raked in $83.2 million worldwide, propelling its total gross to $747.4 million.

A Historic Milestone

With only two films, the plumber franchise has already surpassed the $2 billion mark, breaking into the top 10 highest-grossing animated series of all time. Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri now oversees three franchises in the top ten (including Despicable Me and Ice Age). Currently, the sequel officially stands as the highest-grossing film of 2026, overtaking the Chinese blockbuster Pegasus 3 ($647.8 million).

Mario’s Global Dominance:

  • Mexico: Earnings reached $55.5 million, surpassing the figures set by Barbie.
  • UK and Ireland: Despite a record-breaking heatwave, the film remains at the top of the charts with a total of $44.1 million.
  • France: A box office of $34 million allowed it to outpace Toy Story 4.
  • China: Grosses hit $17.1 million, exceeding the performance of Moana 2.

Ryan Gosling’s Cosmic Success

The sci-fi drama Project Hail Mary is also demonstrating remarkable staying power. In its fifth week, the film earned $41.4 million, bringing its global total to $573.1 million. The picture holds particularly strong positions in the UK ($40.3M), China ($36.7M), and Australia ($22.5M). The IMAX format alone has contributed $90 million, cementing its status as a visual masterpiece that demands a big-screen experience.

Horrors and Newcomers

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy made a solid debut with $34 million at the international box office. With a modest budget of $22 million, the film is already on the fast track to profitability. Its opening performance aligns with genre hits like Scream VI and Evil Dead Rise. In Mexico, the horror flick earned $2.2 million, significantly outperforming recent Blumhouse projects.

In the YA segment, the drama Boulevard expanded its release across Latin America. The story of two outcasts earned $1.8 million over the weekend, showing particularly strong results in Mexico and Peru.
