🆖 Brazil Shifts to TV 3.0 Ahead of 2026 World Cup

At the NAB Show 2026, Brazilian officials announced that the country has selected the American ATSC 3.0 standard as the foundation for its next-generation television system, known as DTV+.

This represents a massive leap for a nation of 212 million people, where 80% of the population still relies on free-to-air (FTA) broadcasts.

Key Features of the New Standard:

  • Hybrid Connectivity: Broadcasting will merge with IP protocols, offering real-time interactivity directly within the broadcast stream.
  • World Cup Kickoff: Pilot tests are scheduled to launch in June, coinciding with the start of the 2026 World Cup. Regulators hope that “football fever” will drive a massive wave of consumer upgrades to new Smart TV sets.
  • Streaming Rivalry: To compete with global streaming giants, Brazil intends to mandate that manufacturers include a dedicated DTV+ button on remote controls and place the app first in the on-screen menu hierarchy.

Brazil’s Minister of Communications emphasized that for the country, free TV is more than just entertainment—it is a “tool for democracy and social integration.” With this transition, that tool is set to become fully digital and high-tech.
