๐Ÿค The Oscars Impose Restrictions on AI

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced new regulations declaring that generative AI cannot replace human beings in the race for the industry's most prestigious golden statuettes.

Stringent filters are now in place for the “Big Five” and other key categories, specifically Screenwriting and Acting. To qualify for a nomination, a work must demonstrate “substantial and meaningful human participation.”

Key Provisions of the New Rules:

  • Writing: While AI may serve as a supplementary tool for screenwriters, the final text must be penned by a human. Artificial intelligence will not be recognized as a “credited author.”
  • Performance: Performances that are entirely or critically generated by digital technologies are now ineligible for acting nominations.
  • Technical Integration: AI remains within the legal framework for technical roles, such as editing, color grading, and visual effects (VFX).

In essence, the Academy has codified a manifesto: AI is a tool, not a creator. By protecting the creative core of filmmaking, the Oscars are reaffirming that the right to “art” belongs exclusively to humans.
