👩‍🎤 K-Pop Animated Hit Shatters Netflix All-Time Record

The animated sensation K-Pop Demon Hunters has been named the most popular film across all streaming platforms in 2025.

According to a study by Ampere Analysis, the movie not only topped the annual charts but also became the most-watched film in Netflix history, surpassing the staggering milestone of 1 billion hours viewed.

A Streaming Breakthrough

Until now, cultural phenomena of this magnitude on Netflix were the exclusive domain of flagship live-action series like Squid Game or Stranger Things. K-Pop Demon Hunters is one of the first original animated features to compete on equal footing with established family-oriented franchises from industry titans like Disney and NBCUniversal.

Key Success Factors:

  • Extended Lifecycle: Unlike most Netflix originals that peak within the first two weeks, Hunters reached its maximum viewership only in its eleventh week of release.
  • Musical Potency: Integration of K-Pop culture allowed the content to transcend the platform, driving high replay value and repeat viewings.
  • Global Reach: Themes rooted in the “Korean Wave” (Hallyu) secured a loyal international fanbase across all demographics.

The Family Content Paradox

Despite the film’s resounding success, Ampere Analysis experts highlight a troubling trend: streaming giants are actually scaling back production of children’s and family content.

| Metric | Research Data |
| -------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| Netflix Kids’ Commissions (2022-2023) | 9% of total volume |
| Netflix Kids’ Commissions (2024-2025) | 4% of total volume |
| SVoD Share in Kids’ Content Production | 13% (vs. 47% by public broadcasters) |

Why are Platforms Exiting the Genre?

  1. Monetization Hurdles: Streamers are pivoting toward ad-supported tiers, where displaying advertisements in children’s programming is legally and technically complex.
  2. The YouTube Factor: Free platforms continue to capture a massive share of children’s attention.
  3. Shifting Priorities: Platforms are refocusing on “Crime” and “Thriller” genres, which narrowly edged out the family sector in engagement during the second half of 2025 (totaling 4.4 billion views).

Nevertheless, for 35% of households with children, a high-quality kids’ catalog remains the decisive factor when choosing to renew a subscription.

The Future of the Franchise

The triumph of Hunters has prompted Netflix to rethink its strategy regarding original Intellectual Property (IP). The streamer has officially greenlit a sequel.

“The film’s musical foundation and its reliance on the Korean cultural code helped build an incredibly engaged audience. The announced sequel proves that developing original IP with multi-generational appeal still holds immense value,” noted Joe Hall, Research Manager at Ampere Analysis.

The original creators—Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans—will return for the second installment. The preliminary release date is set for 2029.
