⚖️ Dua Lipa Sues Samsung Over Unauthorized Likeness
Global pop sensation Dua Lipa has entered a legal battle with tech titan Samsung Electronics. The British star has accused the company of unlawfully using her image to promote its televisions, seeking $15 million (approximately €12.7 million) in damages.
The Core of the Claim
According to the lawsuit filed on May 8 in a California federal court, Samsung placed a copyrighted photograph of the singer on its television packaging. These boxes were prominently displayed in retail stores worldwide.
Attorneys for the performer argue that featuring her face on the front of the packaging misled consumers, creating a false impression that Dua Lipa officially endorses the brand and serves as the “face” of the new TV lineup.
The Story Behind the Photo
The photograph at the center of the dispute was taken backstage at the 2024 Austin City Limits festival. The lawsuit emphasizes that Dua Lipa is the sole owner of all rights to the image.
“Ms. Lipa’s likeness was intentionally used in a massive marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without any compensation, and without any creative control on her part. Ms. Lipa did not, and would not have, granted permission for such use of her image,” the complaint states.
Reactions from the Parties
At this time, representatives for Samsung Electronics have declined to provide an official comment regarding the ongoing litigation.
While this is not Dua Lipa’s first experience defending her intellectual property, the $15 million demand makes this case one of the most high-profile media scandals in the consumer electronics industry in recent years.
