😈 "The Devil Wears Prada 2" Shatters Records

The global box office is showing incredible momentum in May 2026. Growth is being fueled primarily by long-awaited sequels and large-scale musical biopics, which are drawing audiences back to theaters in droves.

The sequel “The Devil Wears Prada 2” continues its triumphant run, grossing $433 million worldwide in just its first two weeks. The star-studded quartet of Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci has once again proven its immense box-office draw.

Over the past weekend, the film added $75 million from international markets and $43 million in North America to its tally. The Disney project is performing exceptionally well overseas ($288 million), with the UK and Italy leading the way at $28 million each. Notably, the sequel has already surpassed the total unadjusted lifetime gross of the 2006 original ($326 million).

Meanwhile, the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” is showing remarkable staying power. In its third week, international earnings dipped only 32%, bringing in $58.5 million for the weekend. The film’s total global cume has now reached $577 million.

At its current pace, “Michael” is well-positioned to challenge “Bohemian Rhapsody” ($910 million) for the title of the highest-grossing musical biopic in history. With a production budget of $155 million, the film is an undeniable hit for Universal and Lionsgate.

The debut of Warner Bros.’ “Mortal Kombat II” came in slightly below projections. The R-rated sequel earned $23 million across 78 international markets and $40 million in the US, resulting in a $63 million global start. While comparisons to the 2021 installment are difficult due to that film’s day-and-date release on HBO Max, the studio remains optimistic—a third chapter is already in development.

Another newcomer, the mystery-comedy “Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie” from Amazon MGM, opened with $28 million worldwide. Analysts predict a long theatrical life for the Hugh Jackman-starrer, driven by strong critical reviews and positive word-of-mouth.

Rounding out the high-profile premieres is the concert film “Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D).” Co-directed by James Cameron and Eilish herself, the film outperformed expectations with a $20 million global debut. Having cost $20 million to produce, the project broke even in its opening weekend, further cementing 24-year-old Billie Eilish’s status as one of the most influential artists of her generation.
