📱 Russian micro-dramas debut on Chinese platform
The Cheboksary-based film company Kinolenta has partnered with the major Chinese streaming service ShortMax, a popular global app specializing in short-form vertical series.
Under the agreement, the first Russian micro-dramas—The Mafia Boss is My Servant and The Bodyguard of Her Love—will make their foreign debut on the platform. The titles will become available to an international audience, including viewers in the United States, who currently drive up to 70% of global revenue in this market segment.
The partnership operates on a revenue-share model, distributing monetization proceeds between the platform and the production house. Revenue is generated through in-app purchases of virtual currency to unlock episodes, premium subscriptions, and integrated advertising. This format allows regional content creators to directly participate in the commercial success of their projects, rather than being limited to a one-time sale of broadcasting rights.
For Russian regional studios, entering such platforms offers a unique opportunity to establish an international presence without competing against the massive budgets of global majors. The economics of micro-dramas enable teams to produce projects in just a few weeks using compact production crews. Furthermore, production in regional areas is significantly more cost-effective than in Moscow or St. Petersburg, reducing logistics, personnel, and location rental costs while maintaining high production values.
According to industry experts, Chinese platforms view the Russian market as a highly lucrative territory, as the country currently lacks a dominant domestic app in this specific niche. Consequently, a sharp increase in joint ventures and co-productions between Russian and Chinese studios is anticipated over the next two to three years.
