🎥 Moscow Film Cluster launches "Russian Background Bank"

The Moscow Film Cluster, alongside its technological partners—including XOVP virtual production studio, a resident of the cluster’s production hub—has unveiled a unique roadster vehicle equipped with a specialized multi-camera rig for 360° panoramic capture.

Simultaneously, a unique service titled the “Russian Background Bank” has been launched on the unified digital film platform. Russian and international filmmakers now have access to an extensive library of virtual environments, captured under various weather and lighting conditions.

The primary technological advantage of the filming roadster is its status as a standard, fully street-legal vehicle. This enables the camera crew to scan and digitize urban environments “on the fly”—eliminating the need to close streets, disrupt traffic, or navigate prolonged administrative approval processes. Furthermore, the camera rig and its stabilization system are fully modular; they can be easily disassembled and mounted onto maritime or aerial transport to capture water paths and flyovers.

Capabilities and advantages of the Russian Background Bank include:

  • Advanced filtering: Producers, directors, and VFX artists can select the ideal backgrounds for driving plates, filtering the content by specific city, season, time of day, and even historical era.
  • Optimized for In-Camera VFX: The collected footage is tailored primarily for projection onto LED volumes in virtual production stages. This technology allows complex scenes to be filmed in a controlled studio environment, independent of unpredictable weather changes.
  • Safety and cost efficiency: Operating inside a soundstage with pre-recorded backgrounds eliminates logistics risks, enhances safety for actors and stunt professionals, and relieves municipal authorities from the necessity of large-scale infrastructure closures.

The new service marks a significant milestone in the development of the Moscow Film Cluster, which currently integrates the Moskino Cinema Park, the Gorky Film Studio, a film production facility, the regional film commission, a theatrical exhibition network, and a unified digital platform. The project is designed to drastically streamline and reduce the costs of the filmmaking pipeline by providing the industry with legally cleared, high-quality digital assets.
