🛒 Rumors surface regarding potential sale of Imax
Imax Corporation has declined to comment on media reports regarding a potential sale of the business, which triggered a sharp spike in the company's stock price, surging nearly 11%.
The latest wave of investor interest in the technology giant began following a report by The Wall Street Journal, which asserted that Imax is in the early stages of reviewing expressions of interest from potential buyers. The heightened interest in the company is driven by a global transformation within the theatrical exhibition market, where premium large formats (PLFs) are emerging as the primary revenue engine for movie theaters.
Although management officially avoided direct comments, Imax CEO Richard Gelfond openly stated in December 2025 that the company’s strategic value was growing due to consumers’ willingness to pay a premium for an enhanced cinematic experience.
“As this trend accelerates, Imax becomes an incredibly valuable asset—either as a fully independent public company or as part of a larger enterprise capable of unlocking even greater potential and scaling our business globally,” Gelfond noted at the time.
Analysts emphasize that the process is in its infancy and may not ultimately result in a transaction. Nevertheless, Hollywood majors are currently doubling down on traditional theatrical distribution with extended exclusive windows. The primary box office drivers on Imax screens recently have been blockbusters such as Avatar: Fire and Ash and Project Hail Mary. Accounting for just 1% of the total screen count in North America, Imax consistently manages to capture up to 20% of opening weekend grosses for major releases like Sinners and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
The potential sale of Imax reflects the entertainment industry’s response to the ongoing phenomenon of “event cinema.” The largest film studios are not only competing for Imax screens but are also increasingly shooting their flagship features directly with the company’s proprietary, certified cameras.
