πΊ UK Television Embarks on a Digital Evolution
Over the next decade, the streaming platform Freely is well-positioned to become the UK's primary free-to-air television service.
According to an updated forecast by platform operator Everyone TV and independent analytical agency 3 Reasons, driven by the rapid expansion of broadband internet and the long-term decline of digital terrestrial television (DTT), Freely will be accessible in 10.5 million British households by 2034. Meanwhile, the number of homes relying on the classic terrestrial platform, Freeview, is projected to drop below the one-million mark.
These findings emerge at a pivotal moment, as the UK government is scheduled to publish its official proposals regarding the future of terrestrial broadcasting in the country in the coming weeks.
Analysts emphasize that internet penetration rates have outpaced all expectations from the past two years. The number of households without broadband access is forecast to shrink from the current 1.2 million to a mere 220,000 by 2034, representing less than 1% of the countryβs viewing audience. Data from the measurement body BARB corroborates this trend: currently, 84% of UK households connect their TV sets to the internet, and 73% of traditional Freeview users simultaneously utilize online services.
Jonathan Thompson, CEO of Everyone TV, noted that the industry is fully prepared for the transition to IP broadcasting; however, he stressed that the process must be meticulously planned to ensure that vulnerable and elderly demographics are not left without access to television.
Launched in 2024 as a collaborative effort by the UKβs major public service broadcasters to counter the streaming era, Freely has already surpassed the one-million-user milestone. While infrastructure operators, such as Arqiva, are calling for the preservation of terrestrial broadcasting beyond 2034, the integration of live and on-demand content via the internet is rapidly turning traditional aerials into historical artifacts.
