๐งโโ๏ธ Zombie Horror Leads South Korean Box Office
The local action-horror feature Colony maintained its hold on the number-one spot at the South Korean box office over the past weekend.
According to the KOBIS tracking system, operating under the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the film grossed $4 million (603,868 admissions) during its third weekend, capturing a dominant 44.35% market share.
The zombie thriller, which chronicles the rapid spread of a hive-mind virus inside a locked-down shopping mall, was directed by Train to Busan filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho and stars Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, and Ji Chang-wook. The project’s cumulative gross has reached $32.6 million since its release.
Securing the number-two spot was the newly released comedy Wild Trio, which pulled in $2 million over the weekend. Directed by Son Jae-gon, the film follows a once-popular K-pop dance trio trying to stage a chaotic and triumphant comeback twenty years after a major scandal.
Third place went to the horror title Backrooms, which brought in $1.3 million (bringing its total to $5.5 million). The biographical musical Michael held onto the fourth position, adding $433,500 to its coffers (for an $11 million cume), while the fantasy-comedy The Supernatural Sweet Shop rounded out the top five with $227,600.
Hollywood releases populated the lower half of the top ten: The Mandalorian & Grogu claimed sixth place ($260,100), the animated hit Super Mario Galaxy Movie landed in seventh ($72,600), and the fantasy-action feature Masters of the Universe debuted at number eight with a modest $58,000. Closing out the top ten was the concert film from virtual K-pop group Plave, titled Plave Asia Tour [Dash: Quantum Leap] Encore in Cinema, which documented their show at the Gocheok Sky Dome and launched with $120,600.
Overall, the total South Korean box office gross for the weekend came to $9.1 million, marking a decline from the $11.9 million recorded the previous weekend.
