šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø Martin Scorsese Accused of Betraying Human Artistry

The Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) has issued a statement sharply condemning legendary Hollywood director Martin Scorsese for his partnership with AI startup Black Forest Labs.

The union accused the auteur of “turning his back on the human creators who have spent their careers helping him realize his most enduring masterpieces.” The controversy was sparked by a promotional video for the generative neural network FLUX, in which the 83-year-old filmmaker reflects on the difficulties of communicating visual concepts to a production crew and positions AI as an ideal communicative bridge.

The Guild’s statement emphasizes that promoting such software effectively devalues and bypasses the labor of production designers, illustrators, set designers, and concept artists, who have successfully visualized cinematic worlds by hand for decades.

Scorsese, who joined Black Forest Labs’ advisory board on June 2, defended his position, noting that cinema is a young art form that must evolve. The director recalled that he had previously embraced pioneering technologies—such as 3D in Hugo and digital de-aging in The Irishman—and views the new AI model merely as a tool to more precisely convey his thoughts to his creative team.

Nevertheless, Scorsese’s move has polarized the industry. Alongside the Guild’s formal protest, filmmaker Boots Riley leveled harsh criticism at the master. Taking to social media, Riley suggested that Scorsese entered into the deal solely due to a massive financial windfall from the startup to secure his family’s wealth. Riley added that the maestro likely “does not care about the consequences,” privately believing that the AI hype cycle is ultimately bound to crash and burn anyway.
