🐘 AI-Powered Micro-Drama Service Amasses 100 Million Users
Indian streaming company JioHotstar has announced the resounding success of its new vertical content service, Tadka. Launched just over two months ago on April 3, 2026, as a standalone tab within the main application, the platform has already surpassed the 100-million-user milestone.
This aggressive and highly successful rollout confirms that India’s largest video service is betting on ultra-short vertical series as the next key content category for the mass market.
Tadka offers viewers free, original micro-dramas with a runtime of 30 to 60 seconds per episode, filmed specifically for mobile devices. At launch, the service’s library boasts over 100 titles spanning genres such as romance, thrillers, comedy, and sports dramas in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and other regional languages.
The project is monetized through advertising and has been highly effective in attracting a youth demographic, with over 42% of views coming from users under the age of 24. Furthermore, the average daily viewing time per user has multiplied fivefold since launch.
The explosive growth was fueled by impeccable timing: Tadka debuted during the opening week of the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket season—the country’s premier sporting event—for which JioHotstar holds exclusive digital rights, providing the service with a massive influx of organic traffic.
The Indian micro-drama market is rapidly turning into a battlefield of industry heavyweights, with vertical projects already being developed by Amazon (Fatafat) and ZEE5 (Bullet), while film studio Yash Raj Films has invested approximately $18 million into the format. According to forecasts by consulting firm BDO India, the daily audience for short-form content in the country could eventually reach 300 to 500 million people.
Backed by the technological and financial muscle of the $8.5 billion joint venture between Reliance Industries and the Walt Disney consortium, Tadka is well-positioned to secure a dominant market share. According to analysts, JioHotstar’s next step will involve introducing a paid subscription tier, mirroring local pioneers of the genre, alongside the active deployment of AI to generate massive volumes of content.
