๐ Russian Viewership Interest in TV Series Plummets by a Third
In the spring of 2026, Russia recorded an unprecedented drop in viewer interest toward episodic content. According to analytical data from the "Kinopoisk Pro Index," cumulative audience attention across all series projects contracted by 31% compared to the same period in 2025.
Amid the broader market downturn, a historic shift occurred: for the first time in four years, American television series surpassed domestic releases in popularity.
In May 2026, the share of interest in US-produced content reached 37%, whereas domestic projects captured only 33% of audience attention. Industry experts attribute this surge to a powerful wave of high-profile international releases, specifically the final seasons of global hits like The Boys and Euphoria. Concurrently, domestic Russian series lost 35% of audience attention year-over-year in the spring, and 13% compared to the winter of this year. Notably, within the domestic segment, the traditional television series format proved more resilient than internet-first premieres: out of the top 20 positions in the overall rankings, three spots were claimed by installments of well-known broadcast television franchises.
The engagement crisis hit proprietary originals from streaming platforms the hardest. The drama Lily of the Valley from the Wink platform was the only streaming original produced without the involvement of traditional TV channels to successfully break into the top 20.
Analysts point out that as early as 2025, streaming originals accounted for only a third of the total interest in Russian content. The spring 2026 figures further validate the trend of cooling audience enthusiasm toward platform-exclusive content.
The market correction also impacted the anime segment: its share in the Index dropped from 18% to 10% over the year, though the genre retains a loyal core fanbase, with the series Jujutsu Kaisen even managing to climb to the third spot in the overall rankings.
