👨‍🎤 K-Pop: Demon Hunters Celebrates a Year of Global Triumph

Exactly one year has passed since the release of the animated hit K-Pop: Demon Hunters by Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation. Over these 52 weeks, the feature has remained a fixture in the streamer's Top 10, becoming the most-viewed original film in the platform's history.

The movie also secured both an Academy Award and a Grammy for Best Original Song with its track “Golden,” marking the first time a K-pop song has ever been honored by the Academy. Director Maggie Kang admitted that the project, which she had envisioned for more than a decade, has transcended the screen to foster a massive, global fan community.

The success of the release has triggered a complete overhaul within the consumer products and licensing industry. During the production phase, Netflix struggled to attract major partners, as brands found it difficult to buy into an animated K-pop concept. In response, the studio launched its own in-house merchandise line, which sold out entirely during the opening weekend. This pivotal moment forced brands to shift their strategies: Mattel and Hasbro entered into an unprecedented co-licensing agreement to jointly produce a doll line, while McDonald’s rolled out a global integration featuring exclusive animation and Korean script on its packaging.

These collaborations have since expanded into the gaming, beauty, and food sectors. Moving forward, the franchise’s roadmap includes a live concert tour, the launch of immersive experiential zones across the United States, and a highly anticipated sequel that is already in active development.м
