🤝 A24 and Google DeepMind Launch AI Research Partnership
Independent entertainment company A24 and Google have announced a strategic partnership dedicated to artificial intelligence research. Under the terms of the agreement, the studio will collaborate with Google’s AI division, DeepMind, to build next-generation technological tools tailored for filmmakers.
Google’s capital commitment will total approximately $75 million. The deal grants A24 access to DeepMind’s research ecosystem and technical infrastructure; however, Google will acquire no proprietary rights to the studio’s content library or internal data.
The agreement marks a new phase in the relationship between Hollywood and the AI sector, as studios increasingly balance litigation with strategic partnerships. This development follows Lionsgate’s expanded alliance with Runway AI and Netflix’s acquisition of InterPositive, an AI startup backed by Ben Affleck.
However, A24 emphasizes that its framework is fundamentally distinct. Scott Belsky, Head of the studio’s technological division A24 Labs, noted that AI developers frequently misstep by positioning their products primarily as mechanisms to cut production budgets and accelerate timelines. In contrast, A24 Labs is focused on preserving creative control and supporting artistic experimentation—such as developing intelligent storyboarding tools currently being stress-tested by directors like Martin Scorsese. According to Belsky, the upcoming solutions “will have nothing to do with the text-to-video content generation that is triggering industry friction.”
This heightened focus on the ethical implications of the technology aligns closely with A24’s demographic base, which consists heavily of young cinephiles (for instance, 85% of the opening weekend audience for the recent hit The Backrooms was under the age of 35). Concurrently, data from Pew Research indicates that approximately half of young adults under 30 believe AI has the potential to negatively impact society.
For its part, DeepMind maintains that the definitive technological breakthrough will occur when sophisticated tools are placed in the hands of premier arthouse creators, who can leverage these innovations to expand the boundaries of cinematic language.
