π½ Scary Movie Franchise Crosses $1 Billion Mark Worldwide
Twenty-six years after the release of the inaugural installment, the Scary Movie comedy franchise, created by the Wayans brothers, has surpassed the $1 billion milestone in cumulative global box office grosses. The historic threshold was breached on the back of the commercial success of the newly launched reboot.
The reboot, financed by Miramax and directed by Michael Tiddes, pulled in $100.5 million domestically (North America) and $108 million internationally by its third week of release, driving its current global tally to $208.5 million. Notably, the film’s net production budget (excluding marketing expenses) stood at a modest, by Hollywood standards, $30 million. The picture’s worldwide opening weekend delivered a franchise-record $105.5 million, while the film itself emerged as the first pure R-rated comedy (without superhero or action elements) to clear the $100 million mark at the domestic box office since the release of Girls Trip in 2017.

The catalyst for the reboot was the reunion of the Wayans brothers as writers, producers, and stars, orchestrated by Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman and executive producer Marc Weinstock. Original franchise stars Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Marlon Wayans, Cheri Oteri, and Dave Sheridan also returned to reprise their roles.
Significantly, Scary Movie marks the second franchise this summer to join the billion-dollar club, following closely behind the comedy property The Devil Wears Prada, which crossed the same milestone (accounting for its sequel) with just two films under its belt.
