⚙️ DVB Steering Board Approves Technical Updates to DVB-I Specifications
The DVB Steering Board has approved a major package of updates to its technical specifications, centered primarily on the DVB-I standard.
The standard ensures a unified framework for the service discovery and description of television services across broadcast, broadband, and hybrid content delivery networks. All newly approved documents have been published as DVB BlueBooks and, upon completion of Verification and Validation (V&V) procedures, will be forwarded to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for formal standardization.
The unveiled documentation package modernizes the core DVB-I service discovery specification and its accompanying implementation guidelines. The revisions significantly strengthen security protocols, enhance interactive application signaling, and elevate the overall user experience. Additionally, the updates address accessibility signaling recommendations, TV-Anytime specifications, interactive TV guidelines, and the foundational adaptive streaming protocol, DVB-DASH.
The anchor of this update package is BlueBook A177r8 (the forthcoming ETSI TS 103 770). The most critical innovation is the introduction of a comprehensive security architecture, integrated into DVB-I for the first time. This framework regulates digital certificate management, content authentication, and the end-to-end protection of service lists (channel lineups).
Furthermore, the A177r8 revision introduces several key enhancements:
- CMCDv2 Support: Integration of the updated Common Media Client Data standard for granular, real-time client-side monitoring of broadcast network events.
- Service List Discovery via mDNS: Streamlining the integration and provisioning of customer-premises equipment (CPE) within managed networks, such as operator-led IPTV platforms.
- Direct DRM Integration into Service Lists: Enabling the transmission of Digital Rights Management (DRM) server parameters directly within the metadata feed, simplifying the distribution of protected premium content.
- Vertical Image Format (2:3): Support for portrait-oriented posters and graphics within electronic program guides (EPGs) to optimize user interfaces for smartphones and tablets.
The development working groups emphasize that the new iteration maintains full backward compatibility. Existing commercial deployments and consumer receivers operating on prior revisions (A177r6 and A177r7) will continue to function seamlessly, as the update merely expands functionality through optional extensions.
Concurrently with the core standard, the Steering Board updated the adjacent technological ecosystem:
- BlueBook A184r3 (DVB-I Implementation Guidelines): Enriches user-journey scenarios for out-of-the-box installation, provides best practices for native (app-less) DRM integration, and defines profiling for Icecast streams.
- BlueBook A185r1 (Accessibility Signaling): Updates user preference templates and improves accessibility workflows for individuals with disabilities (subtitling, audio description).
- Interactive TV and TV-Anytime: BlueBook A137r3 and TV-Anytime Part 3-1 have been adapted to align with the new DVB-I security architecture to verify executable applications and authenticate media resources via URL.
- BlueBook A168r10 (DVB-DASH): The updated streaming standard introduces behavioral rules for players utilizing native DRM alongside DASH-IF interoperability elements developed in collaboration with the Streaming Video Technology Alliance (SVTA).
