📺 WeltN24 Extends Distribution Agreement with Media Broadcast
Contrary to forecasts predicting the absolute dominance of streaming platforms, traditional digital terrestrial television (DTT) in Europe maintains a robust position as a foundational method for direct over-the-air signal reception via conventional antennas.
Concurrently, terrestrial television’s technological infrastructure is undergoing a large-scale transformation, as European nations aggressively optimize spectrum resources and migrate to the highly efficient DVB-T2 broadcasting standard. A clear testament to the long-term resilience of this segment is a newly finalized agreement within the German media market.
German broadcaster WeltN24 has announced the extension of its contract with terrestrial network operator Media Broadcast. Under the terms of the agreement, the distribution of the popular news network WELT HD on the national freenet TV DVB-T2 platform has been officially secured until the end of 2030. The early renewal of this contract underscores the high level of trust between the long-standing partners and highlights the strategic importance of terrestrial broadcasting for major media holdings.
As a result of the deal, freenet TV subscribers across Germany will continue to receive uninterrupted, high-definition (HD) access to WELT HD’s 24-hour news coverage, including analytical programming, live breaking-news reporting, documentaries, and special investigative features.

This contract extension demonstrates WeltN24’s confidence in the future of the DVB-T2 HD standard and guarantees that high-quality journalism will remain accessible to millions of viewers nationwide,” commented Francie Petrick, Managing Director of Media Broadcast.
Frank Hoffmann, Managing Director of WeltN24, also emphasized that premium content deserves technically flawless delivery. According to Hoffmann, the long-term partnership with Media Broadcast ensures the channel maintains a direct connection with its audience, delivering expert analysis and real-time information with superior picture quality.
Germany continues to demonstrate a systematic approach toward the preservation and advancement of its DTT infrastructure through 2030. Media Broadcast has previously secured similar long-term DVB-T2 HD distribution agreements with other leading broadcasting giants, including Warner Bros. Discovery, RTL Deutschland, ProSiebenSat.1, and the sports network Sport1.
These developments confirm that the European media sector views over-the-air terrestrial broadcasting as a critical and cost-effective element of the future hybrid media ecosystem.
