🛍 Sovereign Ad Platform Launches in the EU
Leading European media holdings, telecommunications giants, retailers, and ad tech developers have announced the formation of a massive consortium to launch a unified sovereign platform, the European Media Marketplace (EMM).
The project’s mission is to radically overhaul digital advertising procurement across the European open internet and overcome the historic fragmentation of local markets, data sets, and distribution channels.
The consortium’s founding members include major players from Europe’s B2B and B2C segments: T Advertising Solutions (a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom), Orange Advertising, Vodafone, Virgin Media O2, the ad tech platform Equativ, the analytics firm Experian, as well as prominent marketplaces and content services including Vinted, leboncoin, Kleinanzeigen, and lastminute (via its media hub, Forward). In its initial phase, the platform will roll out operations across five key markets: the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy.
A Unified Infrastructure to Rival Walled Gardens
The EMM project is engineered as a direct alternative to the walled gardens of global US Big Tech corporations. The platform operates as an interoperable B2B storefront, allowing advertisers and agencies to seamlessly execute end-to-end campaigns across Connected TV, online video, display, native, and retail advertising through a single point of access.
The defining differentiator of EMM from its global competitors is that it preserves the full digital sovereignty of its participants. Media publishers, telecom operators, and marketplaces retain absolute control over their inventory, commercial strategies, and raw data, feeding only anonymized behavioral signals and audience profiles into the system. By shortening the intermediary supply chain, the marketplace guarantees that the vast majority of advertising spend remains within the European media ecosystem.
Synergy of Telecom Data and Commercial Intent
The strength of the consortium lies in the unification of unique, first-party data assets from cross-industry sectors.
The telecommunications sector (Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Vodafone) enriches the platform with verified connectivity and content consumption data, strictly adhering to privacy-by-design principles. As Stefan Jaekel, CEO of T Advertising Solutions, noted, all profiles are built exclusively with user consent, and their processing and storage are handled strictly within the EU.
E-commerce and marketplaces contribute unique purchase intent signals to the system. Anna-Lena Mikoteit-Zerb, Director of Advertising Monetization at Kleinanzeigen, emphasized that integrating the search queries of millions of users allows brands to target ads based on real-time commercial intent rather than basic demographics.
Arnaud Créput, CEO of Equativ, concluded that the creation of EMM scales Europe’s premium digital space to a size and level of efficiency that agencies can no longer afford to ignore. According to the initiative’s architects, the project proves that in the post-third-party-cookie era, high-performing campaign results and consumer privacy protection can coexist as a unique, technologically secure competitive advantage for the European digital economy.
