🌝 Calls Mount to 'Freeze' Theatrical Run of New 'Spider-Man' Film

The theatrical distributor Atmosfera Kino, alongside the Russian Cinema Owners Association (AVK), has called on exhibitors to refrain from screening the superhero action film Spider-Man: A New Day via the so-called "pre-show service" model until August 20, 2026.

The primary catalyst for imposing this two-week moratorium is the rescheduled release of the major domestic feature The Last Warrior: Kolobok. Its premiere was moved up from August 13 to August 6 in an effort to maximize box office returns during the remainder of the summer season.

“Supporting key projects of this scale is vital for the theatrical business. To eliminate direct competition and allocate resources efficiently, we are reviewing and shifting the release windows for foreign titles. This approach optimizes the release calendar and ensures maximum results for all industry stakeholders,” AVK representatives commented.

Notably, the ultimatum is highly targeted; the restrictions do not apply to other “gray-market” content lacking official distribution certificates, provided their screenings commenced before August 6. However, when it comes to the new Spider-Man film, the distributor is taking a firm stance. The formal notice explicitly stresses that if the agreement is breached and screenings begin before August 20, Atmosfera Kino reserves the right to renegotiate the commercial terms of future partnerships with non-compliant theaters—up to and including withholding legal key releases.

The worldwide theatrical rollout of Spider-Man: A New Day (a joint project between Sony and Marvel) begins on July 31, while its official release in CIS countries—the traditional source of digital copies used for pre-show screenings—is scheduled for August 6. Consequently, domestic theaters are being urged to “hold the pause” for exactly two weeks.

This situation clearly demonstrates that internal industry regulatory mechanisms are becoming increasingly stringent, with the protection of major national franchises emerging as the top priority for key market players.
