🧜‍♀️ 'The Odyssey' Retains Global Box Office Lead

Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey, released by Universal Pictures, continues its dominant theatrical run at both the domestic and international box office. In its second weekend, the feature pulled in $90 million across 3,943 theaters in the US and Canada.

Through 10 days, the film’s domestic total reached $289 million, with worldwide grosses soaring past $652 million against a $250 million production budget and $125 million marketing campaign.

The Imax format has served as a critical engine for the release: The Odyssey marks the first feature film shot entirely on the company’s proprietary film cameras. Global Imax revenues have already hit $140 million ($78 million in North America and $62 million internationally), with exclusive 70mm film screenings generating $16.9 million. According to Imax CEO Richard Gelfond, the project has transcended standard blockbuster status to become a global cultural event, with premium large-format showtimes sold out weeks in advance.

Disney claimed the second and third spots on the domestic chart: the live-action adaptation of Moana collected $10.5 million in its third weekend (bringing its global total to $228.2 million), while Pixar’s Toy Story 5 added $10 million in its sixth weekend to reach $1.022 billion worldwide, cementing its position as the highest-grossing release of the year to date. Fourth place was shared between Universal and Illumination’s animated feature Minions & Monsters ($9.6 million for the weekend, $411 million globally) and the screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Hadestown ($10.2 million), whose limited release was expanded due to strong audience demand.

Cumulative North American summer box office receipts have now surpassed $3 billion, pacing 10% ahead of last year’s figures and reigniting industry hopes of breaching the $10 billion annual threshold for the first time in the post-pandemic era.
