2️⃣ Redundancy Over Competition

In this column, I will explain why television signal delivery must be built on two independent platforms simultaneously.

TV delivery platforms—both satellite and terrestrial—compete for clients and traffic volumes. Economically, each player is motivated to become the sole delivery route for a client, thereby capturing the entire service scope and associated revenue.

However, this commercial interest of delivery providers directly conflicts with the interest of the client. Uninterrupted, resilient broadcasting requires two independent delivery routes rather than a single provider monopolizing the supply chain.

In recent years, new threat vectors have emerged that target substantial portions of technological infrastructure rather than isolated communication links, nodes, or individual equipment units. Beyond traditional network outages, cable damage, and power failures, the industry now faces large-scale infrastructure threats, external disruptions, and cybersecurity risks.

Under these conditions, relying on a single solution is no longer sufficient—even if its internal circuits, equipment, nodes, and routing paths are fully backed up. Because these elements remain part of one unified ecosystem, the risk of a systemic failure at the platform level persists.

Therefore, the next stage of resilience requires backing up not just individual infrastructure elements, but the entire delivery system as a whole.

Two is Better Than One

A TV channel should reach an operator via two independent delivery systems. This setup can combine two terrestrial platforms, terrestrial and satellite infrastructure, or two satellite systems. The specific combination is secondary; what matters is the true independence of signal reception methods, routing, nodes, hardware, and management systems.

This is not about two sequential stages within a single supply chain, but rather two standalone, fully operational services, each capable of delivering the channel independently.

In my assessment, combining terrestrial and satellite delivery yields the highest level of reliability. However, the most cost-effective architecture depends on specific operational constraints.

For broadcasters, leveraging two terrestrial platforms typically proves more economical. For telecom operators, either terrestrial or satellite delivery may offer a lower cost profile depending on their existing infrastructure and active interconnections.

This commitment to redundancy has driven the ten-year success of the Medialogistika platform.

To advance these operational models, the broader industry must shift its priorities.

Platforms can and should continue to compete on service quality, technology, pricing, and commercial terms. Yet competition must not impede the creation of a secondary, independent path.

Dual-system redundancy does not imply abandoning competition, merging operations, or creating a unified infrastructure. On the contrary, complete redundancy is attainable only by maintaining two distinct systems. Their independence is not an obstacle to collaboration, but an absolute prerequisite for system reliability.

The market must transition from the logic of “deliver via a single platform because it is simpler and cheaper” to “deliver via two independent platforms because it is significantly more reliable.”

While connection speed, cost, and operational convenience remain vital to broadcasters and operators, ensuring uninterrupted signal delivery during major incidents or route failures is paramount.
