📜 'The Master and Margarita' Set for US Theatrical Release
Director Michael Lockshin’s feature adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s iconic novel The Master and Margarita has secured US theatrical distribution. Independent distributor Luminosity Pictures acquired the domestic rights and is slated to release the director's cut in American theaters on September 18, 2026.
Featuring an international ensemble cast led by August Diehl, Yevgeny Tsyganov, Yulia Snigir, and Claes Bang, the project faced prolonged legal and distribution hurdles on the global circuit. Foreign rollout was repeatedly delayed due to complex estate rights disputes and sanction-related restrictions. Despite these headwinds, the film achieved successful theatrical releases across several European territories, including Germany, Austria, Sweden, and Italy. In Russia, the adaptation became the highest-grossing R-rated release in local box office history.
Luminosity Pictures co-owner Peter Hoffman noted that securing non-Russian distribution rights followed extensive negotiations with the film’s producers—Ruben Dishdishyan, Len Blavatnik, Igor Tolstunov, and Anatoly Akimenko.
Lockshin, who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Roman Kantor, emphasized that the original 1930s novel’s core themes—censorship, artistic freedom, and the pursuit of truth—resonate with global audiences today more than ever.
