🎥 Kazakh Cinema Seeks Expanded Footprint in Russian Theaters
Kazakhstan is seeking a broader and more substantial presence for its film industry across the Russian theatrical market. The ambition was outlined by Kanat Iskakov, First Vice Minister of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
According to the official, while effective bilateral cooperation in film distribution is already underway, the full potential of joint theatrical trade remains largely untapped.
Iskakov noted that Russian releases traditionally maintain a broad distribution footprint in Kazakh cinemas and enjoy consistent audience demand. In turn, Astana is eyeing reciprocal distribution volumes for competitive Kazakh projects in Russia. Addressing the prospects of expanding mutual theatrical distribution in the near term, the Vice Minister stated that he considers such a scenario highly realistic.
Currently, the presence of Kazakh films in Russian theaters remains limited and selective. Since early 2026, only two Kazakh titles have received theatrical releases in the Russian Federation: the crime drama Black Yard (Cherny dvor v kino), produced in co-production with Kyrgyzstan, which grossed 49.6 million rubles ($560,000), and the horror feature Dastur, which generated 3.3 million rubles ($37,000). Scaling up mutual distribution volumes is expected to serve as the next logical step in deepening media trade between the two nations.
