🌏 Southeast Asia Emerges as a New Growth Engine for Global Streaming
Streaming platforms are witnessing explosive growth in audience size and viewership across Southeast Asia. In the second quarter, paid subscriptions in the region surged by 15% to hit 77 million, while total watch time expanded by nearly a third, reaching 42 billion hours.
Analysts project that the local market will grow by another 14% by the end of the year, pushing total revenues to $2.9 billion.
The primary driver behind this industry surge is a pivot from Western titles toward original local content. Over 90% of Netflix subscribers in Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines prefer regional releases. On a global scale, viewership of Southeast Asian content jumped by nearly 50%, with more than 40 titles from the region breaking into Netflix’s weekly global Top 10 over the past year.
Netflix maintains an absolute lead in both investment and audience reach across the region. Between 2021 and 2024, the platform poured $200 million into Thai productions alone, and for 2026, it has slated its largest slate to date, featuring eight original projects. Local players are also offering fierce competition to international giants—most notably the Indonesian platform Vidio, which centers its strategy on sports coverage, homegrown original dramas, and micro-drama formats.
Despite record engagement levels, monetization remains the core challenge for the region’s platform economy. Given limited purchasing power and a entrenched habit of consuming free content, market players will need to forge hybrid models that blend subscription plans, ad-supported tiers (AVOD), and exclusive distribution windows.
