🛰 Local Operators Reshape the GEO Market

The global geostationary satellite orbit (GEO) market has split into three distinct tiers: massive transnational corporations, dynamic regional players, and national operators managing fleets of fewer than five spacecraft.

However, this latter segment is currently undergoing a sweeping transformation. Small state-owned and private enterprises, which originally established satellite networks solely to safeguard digital sovereignty, are increasingly pushing into adjacent territories and evolving into fully fledged regional providers.

Southeast Asia

The geography of island nations makes space communications critical infrastructure for the region. In Indonesia, state-owned PT. Bank Rakyat Indonesia successfully operates the specialized BRIsat spacecraft (150° E), interconnecting over 10,000 branch offices. Meanwhile, commercial operator PSN is expanding its high-throughput satellite (HTS) capacity: in May 2026, it brought the heavy 160 Gbps Nusantara Lima satellite (113° E) online. It complements the 150 Gbps SATRIA-1 spacecraft, which has been operated by the SNT consortium since 2024.

Other regional players are also preparing to renew fleets or expand operations:

  • Vietnam (VNPT): Preparing a replacement for Vinasat-1 (132° E), which has reached the end of its 15-year operational lifespan.
  • Laos (LAOSAT): Repaying a loan to China Eximbank through 2031 for Laosat-1 (128.5° E), the nation’s sole communications gateway.

  • Taiwan (Chunghwa Telecom): As part of building a sovereign network, ordered a micro-GEO spacecraft from Astranis, scheduled for launch in 2026.

Central and South Asia

Central and South Asia reflect a clear push toward bolstering national security and extending coverage into neighboring countries. In 2026, Kazakhstan’s JSC “JSC Republican Centre for Space Communications” (RCSC) secured state funding to develop KazSat-3R to replace KazSat-3 (58.5° E).

Turkmen operator CJSC Turkmen hemrasy, in partnership with SSI-Monaco, is preparing to launch the TurkmenAlemi 52E-2 satellite via SpaceX by 2029.

In Iran, a Proton rocket successfully launched the “Jam-e Jam-1” national broadcasting satellite (34° E) in February 2026.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Paksat, which deployed the Paksat-MM1 HTS spacecraft (38° E) in 2024, signed an agreement with China’s Geespace in 2026 to roll out multi-orbital services.

Europe, Middle East, and Africa

National operators in Europe and the Middle East are aggressively pursuing niche technological advantages:

  • Belarus (Belintersat): Continuing commercial operation of Belintersat-1 (51.5° E), a portion of whose capacity is leased by China Satcom under the ZX 15 brand.
  • Greece/Cyprus (Hellas Sat): Preparing to launch Hellas Sat 5 (2027–2028), featuring a flexible payload and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).
  • Qatar (Es’hailSat): The operator of orbital slots 25.5° E and 26° E signed an agreement with Telesat in 2026 to integrate capabilities from the Lightspeed LEO constellation.
  • Norway (Space Norway / Thor): At the 1° W slot, the lifespan of Intelsat 10-02 was extended by five years thanks to an MEV servicing mission. The launch of Thor 8 from Thales Alenia Space is scheduled for 2027.
  • Angola (GGPEN): Transformed the heavy Angosat-2 satellite (2022) from a strictly national project into a regional hub platform after signing an agreement in 2025 to cover Namibian territory.

South and Central America

In the Americas, Argentina (ARSAT) stands out by maintaining a commitment to developing its own geostationary spacecraft. Launch plans for 2027–2028 include two Ka-band HTS satellites: ARSAT-SG1 (70 Gbps throughput, prime contractor—Argentina’s Invap) and ARSAT-SG2.

In Mexico, Sky Mexico continues to operate Sky Mexico 1 (78.8° W), while Bolivia (ABE) meets its national requirements via the TKSAT-1 spacecraft (87.2° W).

The overarching trend is clear: maintaining a purely localized, single-orbit model is no longer economically viable for national operators. To survive against global GEO giants and the aggressive influx of LEO mega-constellations, smaller players are forced to pivot toward hybrid, multi-orbital architectures and commercialize their capacity on the international market.
