๐ฌ State Duma Seeks Legislative Boost for Patriotic Cinema Share in Russian Box Office
The State Duma is working on establishing legal quotas to increase the proportion of patriotic and family films in domestic movie theaters, according to Olga Kazakova, Chair of the State Duma Committee on Culture.
According to the committee head, the legal framework for these changes is already being laid down. Within the enacted legislation, Russia is defining priority areas for state support of the film industry. Patriotic and historical cinema, alongside films celebrating creative labor, have been designated as top priorities. Lawmakers plan to follow this by regulating the direct presence of such content on movie screens.
“We have passed a law establishing these priority areas, with top priority for state support going to patriotic films, historical movies, and films about creative labor. Another proposal currently under consideration is to increase the box-office share of domestic cinema dealing with these topics, and we have already begun work on this,” emphasized Olga Kazakova.
Earlier, domestic filmmakers received official guidelines on producing and distributing media content aimed at preserving and strengthening traditional family values. According to film industry sources, these guidelines currently remain voluntary; however, the State Duma’s legislative initiatives signal a clear trajectory toward stronger state regulation and oversight of theater repertoire policies.
