The film remained available in the project’s media slot—erroneously replacing the trailer—for just a couple of hours, but that was more than enough time for subscribers to record copies and trigger a global wave of piracy.
For distributors and international buyers who poured millions into acquiring and marketing the film, the situation has turned into a nightmare. Lionsgate, which paid over $10 million for the theatrical rights against a total budget exceeding $50 million, has already deployed anti-piracy teams to contain the damage.
