2️⃣ 'Spider-Man' Climbs to Second Place in US Box Office History
The fourth standalone Peter Parker film starring Tom Holland continues to rewrite global box-office history. Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios' blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially become the second highest-grossing film in North American theatrical history.
With a domestic tally of $858.4 million, Destin Daniel Cretton’s picture managed to surpass the $858.3 million mark set by Avengers: Endgame. The all-time leader in the US domestic market remains Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens at $936.6 million. Just last week, Brand New Day also set a record as the fastest film to cross the $800 million domestic threshold—accomplishing the feat in just 19 days.
At the global box office, the film has climbed to 6th place with a total of $2.22 billion, leaving The Force Awakens ($2.07 billion) behind. In the coming days, the picture is poised to overtake Titanic ($2.26 billion, 5th place) and the Chinese animated hit Ne Zha 2 ($2.27 billion, 4th place).
The phenomenal launch of Brand New Day—which scored a record-breaking $360 million opening weekend in the US—has revitalized the entire summer 2026 theatrical market. Total domestic revenue has already crossed $7 billion, marking a 20.4% increase compared to 2025.
Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman, addressing the project’s success amid ongoing discussions of “superhero fatigue” (amplified by the weak box-office performance of Supergirl), noted that it all comes down to quality:
“Audiences today demand greatness. If a movie is merely ‘okay,’ people will stay home and watch something ‘okay’ on TV. To get them into a movie theater, the product has to be extraordinary. The answer is that simple.”
