🎬 AI Studio Shapes New Approach to Film and Series Production
California-based Utopai Studios, which evolved from tech company Cybever (a specialist in 3D modeling and video generation), has announced the launch of full-scale studio production.
Boasting an independent valuation of $1 billion, the company positions itself as the first major “AI-native” film studio, blending its proprietary PAI neural network tools with traditional filmmaking techniques.
Led by CEO Cecilia Shen and CTO Jie Yang, Utopai Studios currently has 25 projects in various stages of development. The studio relies on a hybrid model: the degree of AI integration ranges from targeted visual assistance to fully generated animation, all while carrying out production workflows in alignment with Hollywood guilds. The company’s first major releases are slate for 2027.
Key Lineup Projects:
- “Space Nation” (Sci-Fi Series): An 8-episode project directed by Martin Weisz and produced by Marco Weber (Ex Machina Studios). The story of pilots defending Earth became one of the first AI-assisted series acquired by a traditional distributor—Brazilian streaming platform Globoplay.
- “Cortés” (Historical Epic): A drama centered on Hernán Cortés that languished in development for decades due to prohibitive budget constraints. Scripted by Oscar nominee Nicholas Kazan and directed by Paul Mignot, the film leverages PAI AI tools to reduce the cost of complex visual sequences while preserving director-led creative control.
- “Half Moon” (Live-Action Drama): A co-production with partners from Germany and South Korea, with principal photography having kicked off in August 2026. AI is applied minimally—serving strictly to assist select visual elements—while the primary emphasis remains on classic dramatic performances.
- “The Most Serious Fart” (Animated Feature): An adaptation of Mike Bender’s children’s book. The project is crafted by artists and animators using traditional techniques, with AI functioning solely as a supporting tool.
- “Journey to the West: The Lost 500 Years” (Animated Series): A co-production with China’s Huace. Unlike the previous animated title, this project is built primarily through AI video generation, adapting the prequel to the Monkey King saga for global audiences.
Utopai Studios’ strategy centers on attracting celebrities and investors from adjacent industries; its early backers and partners include NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and James Harden. The company demonstrates a flexible approach where neural networks serve as an adaptable production tool for creators rather than a replacement for traditional cinema.
