🎦 Russian August Box Office Doubles
Total gross revenues for Russian cinemas doubled in August 2026 compared to the same period last year, reaching 4.4 billion rubles.
According to data from the Cinema Fund’s EAIS (Unified Federal Automated Information System), monthly attendance surged to 8.9 million viewers, up from 5.4 million a year earlier.
A defining feature of the month was the record dominance of short films, which served as a cover for pre-show screen time used to exhibit Hollywood releases lacking official distribution in Russia. For the first time this year, unlicenced “grey market” screenings claimed seven of the top ten spots among the month’s highest-grossing releases (securing 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, and 10th places). Specifically, short film titles such as Farewell (514.4 million rubles), Hey, Human (202.3 million rubles), and Akpars’ Match (191.5 million rubles) masked major releases including Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the animated blockbuster Minions & Monsters.
Official, licensed theatrical releases accounted for only two domestic projects in the top ten: The Last Warrior: Kolobok maintained its lead (819 million rubles over the month), while Kikoriki Across the Universes took third place (261.5 million rubles). Industry experts note that launching a major Russian franchise during the summer release window proved successful, while the strong demand for unlicenced Hollywood titles stems from an acute shortage of high-budget content tailored for adult audiences.
The financial cushion built in August will allow cinema chains to offset the traditional autumn dip in September attendance and smoothly transition into preparations for the peak New Year holiday season.
