šŸæ Children’s Content Drives Box Office

The Russian theatrical market is demonstrating a marked shift toward family-oriented content and long-running franchises. Following the past weekend, the total gross of the top 20 films reached 898 million rubles (1.025 billion rubles including the CIS region).

Despite a 27% drop in overall box office revenue compared to the previous week, theatrical figures soared by 280% over the same period last year.

The week’s primary official release was the animated feature Luntik: The Other Side of the Moon (produced by Melnitsa Animation Studio, CTB Film Company, and Russia-1). The film grossed 93.3 million rubles and drew 243,000 moviegoers, posting the strongest opening weekend among all animated titles in 2026 and outpacing Leo and Tig: The Road to Baikal (49.1 million rubles). Although the sequel fell short of the record-breaking debut of its predecessor—Luntik: Returning Home opened to 108 million rubles—producer Sergey Selyanov noted that the project is on track to lead the season. Meanwhile, industry experts highlight a global trend: over the past 18 months, family audiences have been steadily transitioning from cinema halls to streaming services and television.

In tandem, major domestic titles and genre films are solidifying their positions in the box office charts:

  • Family Franchises. In its fourth week of release, The Last Warrior: Kolobok added 78 million rubles, bringing its cumulative gross to 888 million rubles (2.154 million viewers) and outpacing the theatrical trajectories of Serf 3 and House Elfin Kuzya 2. The hybrid live-action/animated feature Kikoriki Through the Universes reached 281 million rubles, making it the highest-grossing entry in the history of the franchise.
  • Foreign Releases & Biopics. The action thriller Mutiny debuted in third place with 63.5 million rubles (108,000 viewers). Meanwhile, the musical biopic Michael has held a spot in the top 10 for 14 consecutive weeks, reaching a cumulative gross of 2.305 billion rubles with 4.273 million tickets sold.
  • Local Phenomena & Horrors. Stepan Burnashev’s psychological thriller Penthouse pulled in 5.2 million rubles, with 82.9% of its gross originating from its home region, the Sakha Republic (Yakutia). Genre newcomers Nightmare on Coral Grove Street (4.8 million) and Creepypasta: The Blue Baby (4.6 million) opened in line with average summer performance for the horror segment.

The unofficial (shadow) sector—calculated by experts based on the variance between official government registry data (EAIS) and verified distributor reporting—accounted for approximately 582 million rubles. The bulk of unlicensed screenings was driven by the blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Overall, revenue in the unofficial segment decreased by 40.6% compared to the preceding weekend.
