🎦 The Odyssey surpasses Spider-Man at the global box office
The global box office saw a shift at the top over the past weekend. Universal’s epic The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan and now in its eighth week of release, reclaimed the No. 1 spot at the worldwide box office, grossing $45.96 million.
The film managed to edge out Sony and Marvel Studios’ blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which brought in $44.1 million in its sixth frame. The friendly rivalry between Tom Holland and Zendaya—who star in both releases—continues, with Zendaya taking the upper hand this time around.
The Odyssey has now reached a cumulative global total of $1.627 billion, including $584.7 million from North America. The film is closing in on Jurassic World ($1.67 billion) as it vies to become Universal’s highest-grossing release of all time. Format performance in IMAX has provided a substantial boost, generating over $486 million to date—an absolute record for the network. Grosses were further bolstered this week by early previews in Japan across 62 IMAX screens, pulling in $755,000 ahead of its full commercial release on September 11.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains one of the highest-grossing releases in cinematic history. With a staggering global total of $2.4 billion ($1.485 billion internationally and $917.8 million domestically), the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed picture has cemented its position as the third highest-grossing film of all time, trailing only Avatar ($2.9 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.799 billion).
Territorial performance highlights a clear split in audience preferences. The Odyssey leads in markets such as South Korea ($80 million), France ($86 million), Italy ($64.1 million), the Netherlands ($23.7 million), and Saudi Arabia ($20.1 million). Conversely, Spider-Man: Brand New Day maintains its dominance in China ($230.8 million), the UK ($130 million), Mexico ($89.8 million), Brazil ($73 million), and Germany ($66.5 million).
