🎬 Kane Parsons to Direct "The Backrooms 2"
A24 has officially greenlit a sequel to the hit horror film The Backrooms, with the original director Kane Parsons set to return at the helm. An official announcement from the studio is expected shortly.
Industry insiders were hardly surprised by A24’s decision to make The Backrooms 2 Parsons’ next project, though it remained uncertain until recently whether the filmmaker would jump straight back into the franchise. Earlier reports indicated he was developing another project in parallel, but he ultimately chose to prioritize the follow-up to his box-office blockbuster.
Parsons’ meteoric rise remains an unprecedented case in the modern film industry. In 2022, the then-16-year-old uploaded a nine-minute analog horror short, The Backrooms (Found Footage), to YouTube, where it racked up nearly 80 million views. The project caught the eye of executive producer Chris White, prompting James Wan and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster to join as producers, while A24 acquired the feature film rights.
Parsons’ feature debut delivered record-breaking box-office numbers for A24, turning a niche internet phenomenon into a full-fledged cinematic franchise. The director himself has repeatedly emphasized that the first film was merely an entry point into a vast narrative universe centered on the mysterious Async corporation, noting that his contract included options for sequels from the very start.
