🍿 EMEA Box Office Revenue Soars by 88%
The International Union of Cinemas (UNIC) presented its August 2026 report at the Lumière Summit in France.
Global box office receipts surpassed $4 billion, while the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) experienced a record-breaking surge, with cinema attendance jumping 88% year-over-year. August marked the eighth consecutive month of double-digit growth for the region.
The French market recorded 19.9 million ticket sales—the highest August figure since tracking began in 1980, doubling the results from August 2025. Italy logged its most successful June–August period on record, drawing 20.8 million moviegoers and generating €162.3 million in revenue. According to Gower Street Analytics, impressive year-over-year growth was also posted by the UK and Ireland (+80%), the Netherlands (+77%), and Spain (+71%).
The primary drivers behind this blockbuster season were the international hits Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey. Alongside Hollywood releases, local titles played a vital role, including the French historical drama De Gaulle, the German comedy The Baked Fish Fiasco (Steckerlsfischfiasko), and the latest installment in the Spanish family franchise, Tad the Lost Explorer and the Secret Image (Tadeo Jones 4). As UNIC CEO Laura Houlgatte noted, this summer’s performance clearly demonstrates that audiences continue to value the theatrical experience, turning film premieres into major cultural events.
