🎬 US Vertical Series Market Shifts to AI
The Chinese micro-drama trend—which conquered the US and served as a lifeline for Hollywood crew members following the 2023 strikes—now faces a new challenge.
American platforms, including DramaBox, DramaWave, FlareFlow, and My Muse, have begun replacing real actors and crews with generated content.
This technological shift accelerated following the February release of the Seedance 2.0 neural network, which made generative graphics and synthetic characters realistic enough for mass production. The transition to AI is fundamentally reshaping the economics of the industry:
- Budgets: Producing a live-action season costs $100,000–$300,000, whereas an AI project of equivalent length costs $60,000–$100,000 (with certain players, such as TrueShort, claiming budgets starting as low as $1,000).
- Timelines: The production and post-production cycle has dropped from 12 weeks to just 2.
- Staffing: Instead of a 50-person crew, a project requires a team of only 5 specialists.
For Los Angeles industry professionals, this has resulted in a steep drop in employment: auditions for vertical projects have fallen dramatically, and content buyers are canceling live-action show contracts en masse in favor of AI.
The unethical use of technology has created additional tension. Actors and agents report routine contract violations: deepfake versions of real performers are used without consent in clickbait and aggressive advertising, while synthetic characters visually copy popular Hollywood stars to the point of confusing similarity. Screenwriters, meanwhile, express frustration that their scripts are adapted by AI models without preserving their original narrative intent.
While some producers hope the “AI bubble” will burst due to viewer resistance to synthetic content, others are bracing for a trajectory similar to the Chinese market, where over 95% of new micro-dramas were created using AI.
