🎩 Media Industry Urged to Abandon Elitism to Survive
During the WorldSkills Café session at the IBC2026 convention, media analyst Evan Shapiro launched a scathing critique of top leadership across modern media and tech giants.
In his view, relying on a narrow circle of privileged executives has become the industry’s greatest strategic threat, stifling innovation and blinding companies to the real demands of their audience.
According to data presented by Shapiro, 59% of top executives at leading media companies graduated from just 34 global universities, while 95% of major corporate leaders hail from wealthy backgrounds or elite dynasties. Drawing parallels to the decline of the Habsburg dynasty, the analyst emphasized that this corporate inbreeding results in strategic blindness, a disconnect from the economic realities of viewers, and a reliance on copycat strategies—ranging from launching identical streaming services to conducting mass layoffs under the guise of AI implementation.
The situation is further exacerbated by a widening divide: the average media CEO earns 652 times more than the average employee, while investment in staff training and development has plummeted by 67% over the past six years.
Panelists—including Lisa Opie, Chair of ScreenSkills, and Carrie Wootten, Co-Founder of the Media Talent Manifesto—echoed the urgent call to recruit talent from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and integrate young creators directly into decision-making processes.
