🏆 Winners of the 2026 IBC Innovation Awards Announced

The defining hallmark of the awards remains collaboration: honors are bestowed for the practical implementation of solutions developed in partnership between broadcasters, IT giants, and industry institutes, rather than for off-the-shelf products.

• Content Creation: The award went to the Media eXchange Layer (MXL) initiative—an open media production standard developed by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA). Deployed under the auspices of the Linux Foundation, the project has already been successfully implemented by Canadian broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada.
• Content Distribution: Reuters took top honors for replacing its fixed news distribution infrastructure with a dynamic Global Shared Memory environment powered by TVU MediaMesh. The project was realized in collaboration with Sony, TAG Video Systems, and Elecard.
• Content Everywhere: Brazilian media giant Globo won for its deployment of the DTV+ platform. The solution merges over-the-air broadcasting with broadband access, maintaining mass broadcast reach while adding targeting and analytics capabilities.
• Social Impact: G&L Systemhaus, alongside partners Signapse, Norsk/id3as, and Akamai, received the award for integrating an AI-driven sign language translation system for live streams and VoD.
• IBC Accelerator Project of the Year: The award was presented to the “AI Agent Assistants for Live Production” project, led by ITN, BBC, and Channel 4 in partnership with Google Cloud, EVS, and CuePilot. The solution offers a hybrid approach: AI assistants automate routine operations during live broadcasts while keeping editorial control firmly in human hands.

The highest individual accolade, the IBC International Honour for Excellence, was awarded to Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) for its global contribution to advancing sports broadcasting technology. The Best Technical Paper award went to researchers from i2 Media Research, who presented a framework for adapting interactive TV interfaces to the needs of older viewers.

Fergal Ringrose, Chair of the Innovation Awards Jury, emphasized that the 2026 winners successfully bridged geographical and organizational boundaries to build scalable, cloud-first media ecosystems.
