🎉 Apple TV tops the Emmy leaderboard for the first time
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, held on September 14, 2026, in Los Angeles, marked a historic shift in the streaming hierarchy. For the first time ever, Apple TV took top honors with the most overall wins, securing 28 statues and dethroning longtime industry leaders HBO Max (21 wins) and Netflix (16 wins).
Over the past two decades, FX (in 2024) had been the only other network or platform to break the two giants’ stranglehold on first place.
The evening’s big winner and Apple TV’s primary engine was the comedy horror-drama Widow’s Bay, which set an all-time record for comedy series with 14 wins in a single season (8 at the Creative Arts Emmys and 6 during the main telecast). The show swept the major comedy categories, taking home Outstanding Comedy Series, Directing, Writing, Lead Actor, and Supporting Acting awards. This performance shattered the platform’s previous benchmark of 13 wins set by The Studio in 2025. Lead actor Matthew Rhys made history of his own: by winning for Widow’s Bay alongside a victory for the limited series The Beast in Me (Netflix), he became the first actor to win two lead acting Emmys in different categories in the same year.
While Widow’s Bay accounted for half of the platform’s total tally, Apple TV’s triumph was no single-hit fluke. Statuettes were spread across several other flagship titles, including Pluribus (6 wins), Margo’s Got Money Troubles (3), Palm Royale (3), Slow Horses, and Mr. Scorsese. Apple also delivered an exceptionally high nomination-to-win conversion rate: despite securing only 87 nominations compared to Netflix’s 111 and HBO Max’s 122, the Cupertino streaming service captured the top spot.
HBO Max maintained its stronghold in the drama categories behind The Pitt, which claimed Outstanding Drama Series for a second consecutive year—the first show to win back-to-back for its first two seasons since Mad Men. Meanwhile, the limited series DTF St. Louis added 7 wins to the network’s roster. Dropping to third place, Netflix illustrated that sheer library volume and total nomination counts do not automatically translate to final dominance.
The results of the 2026 Emmys reinforce that Apple TV’s strategy—focusing on curated, high-value prestige titles over raw volume—has firmly established itself as one of the most effective operating models in the global media landscape.
