🚧 Europe Yearns for AI and Cloud Sovereignty
At a Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) session held during IBC2026, experts examined the key requirements for building an independent European cloud and AI ecosystem.
The panel’s primary takeaway was the urgent need to scale market cooperation to reduce critical reliance on American hyperscalers.
Adrian Sommer, data and AI strategy specialist at Schwarz Digits/Stackit, emphasized that no single organization can achieve sovereign AI alone. He noted that as the industry shifts its focus from foundational general-purpose models to specialized solutions, a window of opportunity opens for Europe—provided the market pools its resources.
Jeff Kember, developer relations specialist for the broadcast sector at Nvidia, urged European enterprises and the public sector to adopt a pragmatic approach. Rather than attempting to compete directly in training massive foundation models, he recommended focusing on practical, quick-win applications with clear metrics for success. Similarly, Tobias Walther, professor at the Mainz University of Applied Sciences, highlighted that the foundation for sovereignty lies in companies’ readiness to launch joint pilot projects and establish unified industry standards.
Panelists agreed that Europe’s technological gap behind the US and China demands immediate action; otherwise, the region risks becoming a mere consumer of third-party ecosystems.
