🏆 Universal Tops 2026 Global Box Office
Universal Studios has become the first film studio to cross the $5 billion threshold in global box office revenue in 2026. This marks only the third time in the major studio’s history that it has achieved this milestone, following previous $5 billion years in 2015 and 2017.
Of the $5.006 billion total, the domestic market (US and Canada) accounted for $1.788 billion, while international markets contributed $3.218 billion. Revenue was generated across releases from Universal Pictures, Illumination, DreamWorks Animation, and Focus Features. Of the five films to cross the $1 billion mark globally in 2026, three were distributed by Universal (The Odyssey, Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael). The remaining two billion-dollar hits were Spider-Man: Brand A New Day (Sony/Marvel) and Toy Story 5 (Disney/Pixar).
Key Releases and Records:
- “The Odyssey” – Christopher Nolan’s epic feature grossed $1.7 billion worldwide, becoming Universal’s highest-grossing film of all time and entering the top 10 highest-grossing movies in cinema history.
- “Michael” – The Michael Jackson biopic (produced by Lionsgate and distributed internationally by Universal) grossed $1.028 billion. The film set new benchmarks by becoming both the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time (surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody) and the highest-grossing biographical drama overall (overtaking Oppenheimer).
- “Obsession” – The Curry Barker thriller from Focus Features and Blumhouse/Atomic Monster delivered record-breaking profitability. Produced on a budget of under $1 million, the film grossed $519 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing project in the history of both studios.
Universal expects to build significantly on its financial results before the end of the year. The studio’s fall and winter release schedule includes the animated feature Forgotten Island (DreamWorks), the thriller Other Mother starring Jessica Chastain (October 9), an adaptation of Sense and Sensibility starring Daisy Edgar-Jones (October 16), the comedy Focker-In-Law starring Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, and Ariana Grande (November 25), the action film Violent Night 2 (December 4), and Robert Eggers’ horror feature Werwulf (December 25).
