🍿 Historical Thriller "The Assassins" Tops South Korean Box Office
Director Hur Jin-ho’s historical thriller The Assassins took the top spot at the South Korean box office over the weekend.
Opening on September 23—shortly after its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)—the film drew over 1.54 million moviegoers and grossed $11.3 million (15.3 billion won) in its first five days.
Second place during the holiday weekend went to the highly anticipated installment in the popular gambling franchise, Tazza: Song of Beelzebub. Debuting alongside the leader, the film earned just over $6 million with 813,800 admissions.
Rounding out the top three was Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Adding another $5 million to its tally, the film brought its cumulative South Korean earnings to a record-breaking $98 million (11.7 million tickets sold) since its August 5 release, cementing its status as the country’s highest-grossing foreign film of the year.
Fourth place went to Warner Bros. Korea’s remake of the popular Hollywood comedy The Intern, which reached $5.5 million after two weeks in theaters. Debuting in fifth was Lee Chang-dong’s drama A Possible Love; backed by Netflix and accolades from the Venice Film Festival, it pulled in nearly $1 million. The film has been officially submitted as South Korea’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards.
Despite the strong launch of autumn releases, the historical drama The King’s Warden remains the undisputed leader of the 2026 South Korean box office, having grossed $120 million from 16.9 million viewers.
