🎬 Yakut Drama Maut Selected for Berlin Film Festival
The short film Maut by Yakut director Dmitry Davydov will be screened at the 42nd Interfilm International Short Film Festival Berlin, taking place from November 10 to 15, 2026.
The film was produced with the support of the Fund for the Support of Regional Cinema (FPRK) of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia.
The film explores intergenerational continuity and the painful choices parents must make. The plot follows Nikolai, a reindeer herder who longs for his son Grisha to carry on the family trade, while the young man dreams of moving to the city. Working side by side in the harsh winter environment ultimately forces the father to accept his son’s coming of age and personal freedom.
Filming took place during the winter in the village of Khatystyr, located in the Aldansky District of Yakutia. The cast consists entirely of local residents, with lead roles played by Sergei Stepanov, Yaroslav Kuzmin, and Lidia Enokhova—lending the picture a striking documentary realism.
In Berlin, Maut will be screened on November 11, 12, and 14 as part of the special curated program Dog Days Are Over, a showcase of films centered on overcoming crises, parting with the past, and embracing inevitable change.
